There can be a variety of conditions which can lead to infertility. A particular woman may have a single or a combination of factors co-existing. A thorough history and examination, blood tests and imaging (e.g. ultrasound scan) may be needed to arrive at a possible conclusion to make a management plan. Conditions such as polycystic ovaries (PCOS), endometriosis, tubal block, fibroid etc are quite common in Indian population. These conditions may need surgical (Laparoscopic and/or Hysteroscopic) correction to enhance chances of getting pregnant.
Blocked tubes most often can be opened by Hysteroscopic method. These procedures can be performed as day-care procedures.
Conditions such as mild endometriosis and pelvic adhesions which can lead to infertility may not be identifiable by any investigations and may need laparoscopy as the gold-standard to be diagnosed and corrected at the same time. These conditions may however present with specific symptoms that may raise the suspicion of the possible diagnosis.
